What are Warts?
Warts are non cancerous skin growths or, tumors
on your skin which are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
There are different kinds of warts but most commonly they appear
as a dome shaped growth that resemble a cauliflower.
What causes warts?
Warts are caused by coming in direct contact
with a human papilloma virus. This includes sharing personal items
such as towels, razors, etc. with a person who has warts You may
re-infect yourself if you touch the wart and later touch another
part of your body.
Who is most likely to get warts?
Warts can occur in people of all ages however
they occur most commonly in children and young adults. Some people
are more naturally resistant to the HPV viruses and don't get
warts as easily as other people.
How long will warts last?
Untreated, a wart may last months or even years.
However, some warts cannot disappear on their own. Doctors do
not know as of yet why some moles require treatment and others
do not.
What treatments are available to remove
warts?
There are several methods for wart removal.
Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is a keratolytic, meaning it
dissolves the protein that makes up most of both the wart. It
can be found in several forms including pastes and oils. It is
best if the wart is filed down with an emery board or pumice stone
prior to each application. Normal skin surrounding the area being
treated may become red and irritated. That skin may be protected
by using petroleum jelly. To get good results, the acid must be
applied every day for many weeks.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy also knows as liquid nitrogen is
a way of “freezing” and killing off the affected cells.
There will be slight discomfort as your doctor applies liquid
nitrogen treatments to the area. These treatments may be needed
every 1 to 3 weeks for a total of 2 to 4 times. There is no guarantee
with this treatment and if no change is noted, your doctor may
suggest another method of removal.
Burning, Laser and Surgery
If no other methods are effective in removing
your wart, your doctor may suggest burning, laser removal or surgery
for “cutting out” the wart. These options however
may be referred to a dermatologist and are generally avoided as
they may cause scarring.
